PHILANTHROPY
Alpha Chi Omega has adopted the support of victims of domestic violence as a national altruistic project. All members, collegiate and alumnae, provide service in their community to local shelters or organizations that aid victims of domestic violence. The emphasis of this project is to offer members’ time and energy to women, children, and organizations in need.

Our chapter, Gamma Nu, works closely with a local organization called Becky’s House. Becky’s House is a safe house, sheltering woman and children that have been victims of domestic violence. This establishment protects its members with a witness-protection-like program and also helps them to start a new life without violence. They also provide counseling for the women and children that seek their help.

As a chapter we hold an annual philanthropic event that the Fraternities on campus participate in. Last year we held a “Mr. Alpha Chi” pageant in which our Sorority’s sweetheart was chosen. The event was sponsored by each Fraternity that entered a contestant, as well as many businesses in the community. Our joint efforts raised nearly $20,000 for Becky’s House. The pageant was a lot of hard work, but we had a really great time and it was also very fulfilling to know that all proceeds went to such a great cause. Everyone involved put their heart and soul into it and made a great difference.

“We thank you for your $19,660 contribution to Becky’s House.  You have touched so many lives through your generosity.”
~Yvonne Campbell, CFO & Roberta Spoon, President, YWCA Board of Directors

SCHOLARSHIP

Academic interest is one of the five criteria of Alpha Chi Omega nationally and is a top priority in our chapter, where we are proud say we are currently ranked 2nd on campus in scholarship! House study hours and tutoring are available to all members, as well as other programs that help us to be successful academically. Each semester we hold a Scholarship Dessert and each member is encouraged to invite a professor to the house for an evening.  We’ve found that getting to know them can make a huge difference when a grade is on the line! Our chapter also has an enforced academic accountability program called “SASSY” which becomes mandatory if a member’s grade point average drops below our requirement at any time.

Students who take advantage of the academic support available and properly balance their time between academic and extra-curricular pursuits will find that Greek membership can enhance their academic performance. Several national studies have consistently found that retention rates are significantly higher for fraternity and sorority members than for unaffiliated students.
